Living On Budget
April 18th, 2006It’s impossible to survive with an on again, off again budget. You need to live on budget all the time to have a successful personal finance plan. That doesn’t mean that an occasional buying spree has to bring your budget down. You’re human, and because we live in the real world, unplanned purchases will happen. Control spending urges to keep your budgeting efforts on track. But, when you do splurge a little, make adjustments in other areas of your budget to keep your finance plan on track. Budgets usually have several flexible expense areas where you can make adjustments. The worst thing you can do is go off budget completely because of a little slip in self control. Get right back on that horse as they say and start living on budget again!
When you make a commitment to live on a budget, you make a commitment to control spending. Most budgets can survive occasional money mishaps. If you spend a little extra on clothing expenses this month, balance it out by reducing your entertainment expense by an equal amount. If you didn’t need the clothing, you could consider it an entertainment purchase anyway. You probably just enjoy shopping. Admit it, you had fun buying that clothing. That’s a sneaky way to justify the clothing purchase, but it keeps your budget on track. Just don’t get in a habit of justifying purchases that aren’t really needed. It’s a sure way to let spending get out of control. I think you get the idea, though. If you’ve spent a little more than you planned in one area, make small budget changes in other areas to get you through that month’s living expenses.
Our lives are driven by money it seems. What is it they say? Money makes the world go round. One thing’s for sure, it makes living easier. Budgeting your living expenses and sticking to your personal finance plan are important if you are to survive life’s ups and downs. And we all have them. Ups and downs that is. Not having a plan to deal with ups and downs of living can lead to personal finance chaos. It’s not necessary to live in total financial chaos. Self control, a few money management skills, and a good budget plan will keep your finances in balance with your living.
