Budget Family Finances - Make a Difference

Do you have to budget? If you want to be financially independent and provide your family with financial security then the answer is, yes. Families that budget can make a difference in their future. They have more resources for planning and goal setting, and can make a positive impact on their children's lives. Creating a budget opens the doors to financial independence. Budgeting identifies essential expenses and spending habits, sets financial goals, adjusts spending to meet those goals, and builds wealth. Budget family finances to make a difference in your and your children's future. Besides preparing for the future, budgeting money sets a good example for children. It teaches them...

Spending has limits
Good spending habits
Consumer awareness
Money management skills
How to build wealth through finance planning
The importance of setting financial goals
Self control
How to prioritize

Budgeting is the key to successful money management and building financial stability. So, how do you start?

If you're ready to make a difference in your family's financial future, then you're ready to create a family budget. The first step is in knowing what you spend and how much income you have to work with. From there you'll have a clear picture of how your spending compares to your available income. Then comes the task of balancing your spending to fit within or below your income. Including your kids in the process will help them understand any changes in lifestyle that may need to take place in order to successfully balance your budget.

  1. Gather your financial records. This would include cash receipts, checking account, bill pay, credit card statements, and any other method by which you record purchases, bill payments, and expenses.
  2. Decide how you will create and maintain your budget. Choose the easiest method available to suit your lifestyle. The easier you make the task of budgeting, the greater your chances of success.

Create your own budget using a financial planner - Manually enter expenses, income, and do calculations in a financial planner book or on budget worksheets.

Use a Computer data program - Budgets using computer software installed on your personal computer. Manually enter data into a database (like excel) or budgeting software program.

Use an online budgeting program - Online programs are fast becoming the budgeting resource of choice today. Some online budget programs can retrieve financial records for you, track spending, and organize your complete family finance budget. This can prove to be the easiest option for setting up and maintaining your budget.
  3. Enter your personal data. Enter income, expenses, debts, and any savings goals into your budget. Income includes all monies that you use to pay your expenses. Wages, social security, child support, etc. would all be recorded here.

Expenses should include main categories for housing, utilities, food, transportation, health care, pets, and clothing, just to name a few. Expenses are then divided into sub categories and placed accordingly as necessary. You can choose to structure some expenses in subcategories or main categories. For instance, insurance can be a main category or sub-categorized in perspective main categories like housing, health, transportation.

Debts Include debts for mortgage and auto in appropriate categories and then list all other debts (credit card, personal, etc.) separately.

Initial set up of your budget will be the most challenging aspect of the budgeting process. Once you have your budget set up completely, you can identify over spending and adjust to balance your budget. It's not uncommon to find that you are spending more than you earn. In fact, most families are over-extended. Maintaining your personal finance budget will be a breeze if you make entries and update regularly. Analyze your budget every few months to make sure you are still on track to meet your goals and identify any problem areas. Updating changes in income or expenses regularly helps you stick to your budget, and maintain goals for future needs, so you can really make a difference!
