Child's Play to Budget Household Finances?

A budget is defined so simply by Webster as, "the total amount of money allocated for a certain purpose." Yes, the concept of budgeting is simple enough for most children to understand. So, why do most adults fail to understand the concept when trying to budget household expenses and manage personal finances? A child understands that $1 won't buy you a $2 piece of candy. Somehow, many of us loose this simple understanding of elementary math as we grow into adults. Maybe, it's all that algebra, geometry, and calculus that makes us forget. It's hard to think so simply when things get so complicated.

Your personal finances don't have to be so complicated. Thinking in simpler terms could be just what you need to solve your money problems. Let's remember, the child in the scenario above doesn't have the power of the credit card yet! His resources are limited, and therefore he is forced to make a choice based on what he actually has available. If you, as an adult, were faced with these limitations you would be forced to make better choices as well. This is basically living within your means. Budgeting is nothing more than keeping your spending within or below your available income. If you are spending more than you have available, your personal finances are out of control. You may need to simplify to gain control. The first obvious step to simplifying is to eliminate some options. Like the child, we need limitations.

One of the biggest problems with family budgets today is consumer debt. The mortgage on your home is usually not the problem. It's credit card debt that threatens the stability of your family's finances and home. If you are spending more than you earn, then you are consistently creating more debt month after month. Take away the choice to create more debt and you take a big step towards better control over your money. Stop creating more debt. Give up the credit cards! Sound difficult? Of course it does. Especially, if you've been living in a world of high finance on a average finance budget. It's hard to come back to reality. But, it is the only way you will ever be financially independent. Not only do you need to simplify your options, you need to create a simple budgeting plan for success.

A household budgeting plan that balances your spending to fit within your income is all that is required for successful budget planning. You must know how much money you have, and how much you need to pay your expenses. Whether you create your own household budget or use a budgeting software, the goal is the same. Track spending, manage debt, and record household and family expenses to live within your income. Today, there are numerous budgeting software available that really do turn budgeting into child's play. They practically do it all for you! How much easier could it get? You'll probably need to cut back on wasteful or unnecessary spending in order to balance your budget. With that comes the concept of simplifying your life.

It's almost always necessary to eliminate or reduce expenses when you first create a budget. Most people spend at least 10 -15% more than they earn. That means, something has to go. Simplify your personal finances, and your life, by eliminating unnecessary expenses, reducing essential expenses as much as possible, and managing debt. Returning to the basics can be a refreshing comfort in hectic times.

View it in it's simplest terms and budgeting can be as simple as child's play. I have this much money, so I can only spend this much money. If you're still having trouble with that elementary math, just take out the beans (or buttons, or poker chips) and lay them on the table. Count out about 10 of these and then do your adding and subtracting. You'll quickly find that child's play doesn't allow you take away 15 beans from the pile of 10. Still need help, go get the kids to help you out!
