When is your Budget Plan Finished?
I hate to be the bearer of unwelcome news. The truth is, your budget may never be "finished." Budgeting is somewhat like dieting. It's a life long commitment following plans for success. In this case, a financial plan. Sure, you'll have plateaus where things remain unchanged for some time, but eventually life catches up with you. You'll have to adjust your planning to accommodate new or changed expenses, goals, and income. Your budget is finished only if you give up on it. You should never give up on your future. A budget plan is a work in progress.
Budget plans are never written in stone. They are revocable financial agreements with ourselves, so to speak. They are no longer efficient or effective, if not updated to suit current financial needs throughout your life. Tracking your budget can determine if it's actually working as planned. However, life changes. And so, your budget should change to meet new financial needs. People and their financial goals change with time. Some goals are met and new ones are set. Budgets must be nurtured and updated to remain efficient.
Your first born arrives, you move to a larger home, the boss gives you a promotion; these are all changes in your life that will require some changes to your budgeting plan. The first two are clearly goals that many families have. Your budget helps you achieve these goals financially. Then, when these goals are achieved, your budget must change to carry you into the future and achieve new goals. And, of course, we all hope to move up in our jobs and get increases in income. An increase in income will allow you to set new goals that may not have been included in your budgeting plan before due to financial limitations.
Budgeting is a financial plan that helps you take control of your money and move from one stage of life to another. Life is ever changing from one stage to the next. So, you see, budgets must change to meet the needs of each stage in life and plan for the next stage in life. A budget can never actually be a "finished" plan.
