Tips on budgeting

Getting Started

  • Begin by tracking your expenses. The key to bettering your financial situation is spending less money than you make. In order to create an effective budget, you have to know exactly how much you make, and where it's going. Personal budgeting software programs like Mvelopes Personal, Quicken and MS Money make tracking your expenses easy. Mvelopes also tracks your actual income. Our free personal budgeting worksheet can help you get started.
  • Next, divide your expenses into wants and needs. Look at your wants to see where you can cut back. Create your budget based on these amounts, and make sure that your expenses are less than your actual income.
Make sure you plan for some of those ‘unexpected’ and periodic expenses such as car maintenance and registration, birthdays, and wedding gifts.
  • Include a personal spending category for those impulse buys and splurges. This will give you freedom without ruining your budget. Sometimes spending a small amount of money can stop you from blowing a lot.
